Pre-Election Day Acid-Reducing Smoothie

November 7, 2016

Are these USA elections leaving your with a bitter taste in your mouth? For those of you in the United States and even those [of us] abroad, this election has been some major drama! I cannot even imagine what it's like at home [in the US] but I've heard from some great sources that it is intense, to say the least.

Since we cannot control the election results let's instead talk about a great way to reduce acidity in your beautiful body. Did you know your system is always working to strike a perfect pose of neutrality? The normal and healthy temperature of the human body sits at 98.6F/32C, normal blood pressure is 120/80 and also your pH balance should be 7.

The pH scale goes from 0 - 14. A healthy body's pH balance is 7.365 between acid and alkaline. The body is always striving to hit that midline target but you can easily defeat its efforts by eating a burger, a chocolate bar or drinking a cup of coffee. It is said that if you drink one cup of coffee or cola and wanted to reverse the acid impact, you would need to subsequently consume over 30 glasses of alkaline water. (This has me rethinking the cup of coffee I just drank while writing this!)

WHY should you care? An acidic body is like an all night rave for chronic illness/disease. You are literally opening the door to potential issues since disease thrives on that acidic environment. These issues are inflammation, disease, etc.

How do you know where your body stands on the pH scale? You could always buy strips to test your morning urine. Or, just take small steps daily to start moving in a more alkaline-friendly direction. Crowd out acid-inducing foods such as meat, dairy, sugar, coffee, etc. and replace with alkaline foods like cruciferous vegetables (kale, cabbage, etc.), leafy greens, cucumbers, lemons, etc. and pay attention to how your body feels.

Here is a recipe for a green smoothie that is delicious and refreshing. An honest disclaimer - this smoothie is not super sweet and did take me a some time initially to get used to it. Now, I literally crave it. Especially after imbibing in something that is acidic such as cheese or a beer (or two). If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, add a 1-2 bananas or a few dates to the recipe below to sweeten it up. I promise that eventually you will decrease the sweet fruits as your taste buds adapt and you continue to better tune in to what your body needs.

This smoothie is good at any time of the day but for a great start to the day, drink a glass of warm water with half a lemon squeezed in and follow up with a big glass of this smoothie. You will be zinging with energy all morning!

This smoothie is inspired by Kimberly Snyder's Glowing Green Smoothie but I don't follow the recipe strictly as it depends on what I have in the kitchen.

Pre-Election Day Acid-Reducing Smoothie

  • small head romaine lettuce

  • 4 small cucumbers

  • 1 green apple

  • 1 pear

  • 1 avocado

  • 1 handful fresh parsley

  • 6 tbs whole flax seeds

  • Juice of 1/2 lemon (optional)

  • Water 💦

  • Ice

Wash and drain all fruit and veg. Place lettuce into the blender with about 12 oz water. Blend on low until all leaves are incorporated. Add all other ingredients, including additional water (~6 oz more oz) and blend on high until smooth. (Add more water to obtain desired consistency.)

Drink immediately and place remaining smoothie in refrigerator. Store in airtight container for no longer than 48 hours.

Note: I add ice cubes so it's really cold.

Let me know if you try this smoothie recipe and how you feel after making some small changes to your lifestyle.
